Help with your screenshots.

SnapCut works from your Mac’s menu bar. Capture an image, edit it, and copy, save or drag it to where you need it.

Getting started

  1. Open SnapCut and click its capture-frame icon in the menu bar. The app has no Dock icon. Open it again from Finder to show Settings.
  2. Choose Capture Area, drag a rectangle and release to take the screenshot. Escape cancels. The default shortcut is Option-Shift-Command-4; Option-Shift-Command-3 captures a full screen.
  3. Click the thumbnail to edit. Hover over it to copy, save or pin the image, or drag it to an app that accepts image files.

SnapCut requires macOS 15 or later and supports Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Its interface is in English. It works without an account or an internet connection. The planned App Store release is a one-time purchase for the full app, with no subscription or in-app purchases.

Screen access and shortcuts

Allow SnapCut in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording. On older macOS versions, the setting is called Screen Recording. Return to SnapCut and choose Try Again. If macOS requires a restart, quit SnapCut from its menu and open it again. You do not need to restart your Mac.

SnapCut captures still images only. It does not record video or audio, even though macOS uses a recording permission for screenshots. Full Disk Access and Accessibility permissions are not required.

If capture works from the menu but not the keyboard, open Settings → Shortcuts and choose an unused combination with Command or Control. Escape cancels shortcut entry and Delete clears a shortcut.

Capture Window lets you point to a window and click. Space switches between area and window selection before you start dragging. Capture Last Area becomes available after a successful area capture. If that display is disconnected or its resolution or scale changes, select a new area.

Editing and sharing

Drag to create arrows, lines, rectangles, highlights or redactions. Click with Text or Number to place text or a numbered circle. Click an existing object to select it, then move or resize it. Double-click text to edit it. Command-B and Command-I toggle bold and italic; Command-A selects the text in a selected text object. Command-Z undoes and Shift-Command-Z redoes.

Drag an arrow’s middle handle to bend it. Hold Shift or enable the ruler control to lock a line horizontally or vertically. Each tool keeps its own size setting.

Save As lets you choose a name and location. The thumbnail’s Save button uses your chosen save folder; Option-click it to use Save As. SnapCut does not overwrite existing files. If a folder is unavailable, reconnect the drive or choose it again in Settings → Storage & History.

Copy and Drag Image use the current flattened PNG, including crop and redaction. An accepted editor drop closes the editor and dismisses its thumbnail; a cancelled drop leaves both available. If a receiving app rejects file drops, use Copy or save the PNG first.

Pin Image keeps a reference above other windows. Drag it to move and drag its bottom-right corner to resize. The reference follows confirmed edits and is not restored after quitting SnapCut.

History and saved files

Open History from the menu bar to edit previous captures. Thumbnails start empty when the app launches; closing a thumbnail only dismisses its preview.

Settings → Storage & History controls the save folder and retention period. The default is 30 days from capture. Open editors, pinned references and ongoing sharing protect their images until closed or finished. Cleanup runs at startup, after wake and hourly while the app runs.

Exported files remain in the folder you chose and are never deleted by SnapCut’s history cleanup. Internal originals remain editable, including content hidden behind a redaction. BearField IT has no server copy to restore. Do not delete app data as a troubleshooting step if you need to keep it.

Read the SnapCut Privacy Policy for storage, deletion and permission details.
